FAQ - Frequently asked questions

How do I become a sports massage therapist in the UK?

A professional sports massage qualification develops the underpinning knowledge and practical skills required to work within sports massage. For learners starting their sports massage pathway, a Level 3 Sports Massage qualification provides a professional foundation before progression into Level 4 and additional specialist training.

What qualification do I need to become a sports massage therapist?

For learners entering sports massage, Level 3 Sports Massage is a common professional starting point. Qualified sports massage therapists may then progress to Level 4 Sports Massage to develop their knowledge and practical skills further. Always check the individual qualification and professional requirements relevant to the work you intend to undertake.

Can I study sports massage with no previous experience?

Level 3 Sports Massage is designed as a foundation-level professional sports massage pathway, subject to the entry requirements of the qualification. You don't need to complete Level 4 first; Level 4 is a progression route for appropriately qualified practitioners.

Where can I study sports massage courses in Devon?

Holistic Therapies Training Academy (HTTA) offers sports massage training in Bideford, North Devon. Our sports massage pathway includes professional Level 3 and Level 4 training, with practical training and assessment taking place at our Bideford training centre. Check the individual course page for current dates, entry requirements and attendance information.

What is the difference between Level 3 and Level 4 Sports Massage?

Level 3 Sports Massage lays the foundations for professional sports massage practice and includes techniques for pre-event, post-event, intra-event and maintenance massage.

Level 4 Sports Massage builds on these skills and is the progression route for therapists who want to work with injuries and soft tissue dysfunction. If your goal is to assess and treat clients presenting with injuries, you will need to progress beyond Level 3 to the appropriate Level 4 qualification.
